More capacities for Baltic Rail Gate

Lübecker Hafen-Gesellschaft (LHG) is further expanding the Baltic Rail Gate (BRG) intermodal terminal on the Baltic Sea. The capacity of the facility at Skandinavienkai will be significantly enlarged by late summer 2024.

The German state is providing 80% funding for the investment project. The current six tracks, each 600 m long and featuring two cranes, will be lengthened to 720 m of usable track and a third crane will be added per track. The project also includes a new operations building. The power supply to the existing cranes will be extended so that they can handle the entire track lengths in future.

"This will eliminate the capacity bottlenecks that have repeatedly occurred at BRG during peak times," explains LHG managing director Sebastian Jürgens. The maximum handling capacity is currently 140,000 cargo units per year.

Jürgens: "After the expansion, we will be able to massively increase cargo throughput to 240,000 units." The shareholders of BRG, which has been operating the intermodal terminal at Skandinavienkai for 20 years, are Lübecker Hafen-Gesellschaft (LHG) and Kombiverkehr, each with a 50% stake. (cd)
