More and more timber being shipped by rail
Working closely with Austria’s federal forestry office (Österreichische Bundesforste, ÖBf), the ÖBB Rail Cargo Group (RCG) has digitalised the entire rail logistics process for timber transport - from the electronic consignment note and empty wagon orders to future transport status reports and ETA forecasts (estimated time of arrival).
In recent years, ÖBf has transported an average of around 300,000 solid cbm of timber harvested by rail, which corresponds to about a quarter of all ÖBf timber transports. In 2021 alone, ÖBf, together with RCG, was able to save 2,817 t of CO2 in comparison to truck transport. This corresponds to approximately 9,800 avoided truck journeys in just one year. (ben)
