More and more freight shifted to rail
Businesses and freight companies in New Zealand shipping their goods by rail saved nearly 230,000 t of CO2 emissions in the last financial year compared with the emissions that would have been created carrying those products by trucks, Kiwi Rail’s latest data shows. Rail also avoided a million heavy truck trips, saving 84.7 million litres of fuel.
Furthermore, in the last year, ending 30 June 2024, Kiwi Rail linked rail to Ruakura inland port, which is now seeing thousands of containers moved by train. The new Fairfield rail-road hub near Ashburton was also connected to the rail network, enabling rail capacity from the hub to Lyttelton port to grow from 6,000 to 20,000 containers a year. (ben)
