MOL's Mauritius fund ready for action
Japanese carrier MOL has established the "MOL Charitable Trust" in the Republic of Mauritius as part of its actions to address the impacts of an oil spill, which occurred when the MV "Wakashio", a bulk carrier chartered from a subsidiary of Nagashiki Shipping, ran aground on a coral reef south of Mauritius.
In cooperation with the shipowner and relevant authorities, MOL has been working to restore the natural environment of Mauritius and contribute to local communities, with the assistance of experts and organisations specialised in the restoration and protection of the environment.
The newly created trust is part of a JPY 800 million (USD 7.25 million) fund which MOL announced in September 2020. The trust will also contribute to strengthening the presence of Mauritius in the Indian Ocean Rim and to fostering relationships between the people of Mauritius and Japan.
In addition, through the Japanese Foundation which is to be established in the near future, MOL will pursue more support activities on a dual basis with the trust. (cd)
