MOL & Kyuden launch LNG ship "Reimei"

Mitsui O.S.K. Lines (MOL) and Kyushu Electric Power (Kyuden) have introduced "Reimei", a Panamax coal carrier powered by LNG, which began operations on 14 November 2023. Launched at Namura Shipbuilding's Imari Shipyard, "Reimei" serves to transport coal to Kyuden's thermal power plants.

LNG fuel substantially cuts emissions compared to traditional marine fuels, reducing CO2 by about 30%, SOx by roughly 100%, and NOx by approximately 80%. The vessel's entry into service was marked by a bunkering procedure at Tobata Port, with future options for ship-to-ship fuel transfer.

MOL and Kyuden are actively pursuing reliable ways to transport energy while minimising the environmental impact. (pb)
