Mobility award for Zillertal railway
The "wood on rail" initiative has won the VCÖ Mobility Prize Tyrol 2021. Already in the first month of operation, around 23,270 t of wood were transported by rail, thus saving 2,250 truck trips.
Binderholz, a specialist for solid wood products and mass timer solutions based in Fügen, Tyrol (Austria) and transport operator Zillertal Verkehrsbetriebe were awarded the prize by Ingrid Felipe, deputy prime minister of Tyrol, Michael Schwendinger of VCÖ and ÖBB regional manager Rene Zumtobel.
"With the reintroduction of railfreight services, we ensure that 68,000 litres of diesel less are burned annually, which reduces greenhouse gas emissions, eases road traffic congestion and significantly improves environmental protection for the population," said Wolfgang Stöhr, commercial director of the Zillertalbahn.
