Mining company to test fossil-free ore transport
Mining company Kaunis Iron is investing in green iron ore transports. In partnership with Volvo Trucks, it will test heavy electric trucks of 74 t in a unique project. Kaunis Iron has earmarked SEK 0.5 billion (EUR 46,500) for the acquisition of new electric trucks.
Today, the company transports its ore over a 160 km road between Kaunisvaara and Pitkäjärvi in northern Sweden, using Volvo trucks run on diesel.
A total of thirty 90-t semi-trailers make the journey around the clock. The plan going forward is to switch to battery-electric trucks for heavy transportation, so that it can operate completely fossil-free with zero CO2 emissions. (ben)
