Mining company tests electric locomotives
Vale, a mining and logistics company based in Brazil, has received its second 100% electric and battery powered locomotive. Manufactured in China by CRRC Zhuzhou Locomotive, the unit will initially operate in the Ponta da Madeira Terminal's switchyard in Sao Luis. Its batteries can operate up to ten hours without stops for recharging.
Before entering service, the locomotive will remain in the terminal's locomotive workshop for 90 days for system verification and testing. The first test in the terminal’s switchyard is scheduled for July, Vale said.
The e-locomotive is part of the company's strategy to electrify its mine and railroad equipment. Currently, Vale's fleet totals 490 locomotives, powered by diesel and used to transport iron ore. (ben)
