Milestone in Manzanillo
The first carbon-neutral container in North America has been processed at Contecon Manzanillo (CMSA), the Mexican branch of International Container Terminal Services, Inc. (Ictsi). A bespoke ceremony took place to also celebrate the arrival of the first LNG-powered container vessel, the "CMA CGM Liberty", in Mexico.
CMSA CEO José Antonio Contreras: "Contecon Manzanillo was recognised in 2022 as the first port terminal in North America to receive the UNE-14064-3:2019 Carbon Neutral certification."
Javier Moreira, CMA CGM Mexico general director, qualifies the port of Manzanillo as "the first point of arrival" in the country.
With this in mind, CMSA is investing more than USD 230 million to expand the terminal, with the construction of a new dock and infrastructure in the yard. The annual handling volume is expected to increase from 1.5 million teu to more than 2.2 million teu within the next two years. (lh)
