Memphis blockage of Mississippi over
The Mississippi River, which was blocked near the International Port of Memphis till Friday, has been reopened for barge traffic. The US Coast Guard emphasised that the shutdown of the waterways, which caused a backlog of more than 1,000 barges, is now over.
Again it was a bridge. Inland navigation was stopped on Tuesday last week because of fissures in the Hernando De Soto Bridge which carries the Interstate 40. Now, all restrictions on vessel traffic have been lifted.
Ryan Rhodes, captain of the Port of Memphis, was quoted in the press that "transit under the I-40 bridge is safe for maritime traffic.” (cd)
