Measuring wind conditions in real time

Mitsui O.S.K. Lines (MOL) and Metro Weather have launched a demonstration experiment on the route between Tokyo and Fukuoka using Doppler lidar, a long-range wind condition measurement device installed on the ro-ro vessel “Musashi Maru”.

It is the first Doppler lidar to be installed on a large seagoing vessel. It will allow MOL and Metro Weather to observe real-time wind 3D conditions over 10 km away and onboard.

The data collected will be transferred to shore via Starlink, a high-speed data communication system, aiming to reduce fuel oil consumption onboard and contribute to safe operations. (pb)
