Maximising pallet space

Toyota Material Handling has overseen the redesigning and building of racking and storage systems at a warehouse belonging to Hemisphere Freight Services near Ipswich, UK.

To maximise storage space, Toyota’s turnkey solution opted for a very narrow aisle racking, adding 1,800 more pallet locations than any other scheme from the tender process. Each bay is now 3.6 m wide, which is ideal for variable combinations of standard-size or Euro-size pallets but avoids any so-called “dead space”.

The VNA racking is served by a fleet of Toyota Vector VCE150A articulated man-up combi trucks. These have an open-fronted design and can be manoeuvred easily through tight spaces both outside and within the aisles.

The solution includes fleet management and Toyota’s navigation system to ensure that underutilised vehicles or unused capacity will be flagged up, while trucks can also be positioned semi-automatically. (mk)
