Maritime safety improves as ship losses decline
Celebrating its 2024 World Maritime Day under the theme "Navigating the future: safety first!" on 26 September, the International Maritime Organisation (IMO) reports an increase in the safety of maritime transport. According to Allianz Commercial, ship losses have fallen by 70% over the last decade, with only 26 vessels lost in 2023. This decline is noteworthy, given the growth of global shipping activity.
Improvements are attributed to stringent safety regulations, inspections, and technological advancements, making today's maritime industry one of the safest. The VDR (Verband Deutscher Reeder, German Shipowners’ Association) praised the effectiveness of these measures. (pb)
