Maritime augments rail service in UK
Despite the economic uncertainty and downturn in container traffic due to Covid-19, Maritime Intermodal has launched a new railfreight service in UK from DP World Southampton to its terminal at East Midlands Gateway (EMG).
Hauled by DB Cargo UK, the new shuttle has a capacity to move up to 74 teu each way. Maritime’s eighth service to date has so far run for two consecutive days and will eventually be utilised regularly subject to container volumes, the company said.
In the past, containers destined for the large manufacturing and consumer conurbations in the East Midlands region would have been stored at Maritime’s Birmingham Intermodal Freight Terminal. Now EMG can accommodate up to 4,000 teu, which will enable Maritime to cut journeys significantly. (ben)
