Marine Medical urges malaria vigilance for seafarers
On World Malaria Day (25 April), Marine Medical Solutions (MMS) warns that malaria remains a deadly, yet under-discussed threat for seafarers.
"Unlike COVID-19, malaria is still an ongoing epidemic," said Dr Jens Tülsner, MMS CEO. He called for stronger prevention on board ships operating in high-risk areas such as Sub-Saharan Africa. MMS urges ship managers to ensure awareness, onboard rapid testing, repellents, and stockpiled treatment.
Tülsner also highlighted the need for better diagnostic tools and telemedical support. "Without consistent and proactive prevention, seafarers remain exposed to unnecessary risks," he said. MMS, part of the OneCare Group, provides global medical services for maritime personnel, including telemedicine and repatriation. (ah)
