Many trucks held up at borders every day

At the latest high-level panel in New York, the UN adopted a resolution to connect landlocked countries, the International Road Union (IRU) has reported.

The resolution paves the way for further TIR implementation in landlocked countries, to help them achieve the economic, social and environmental objectives of the UN sustainable development goals.

TIR is the only global transit system, created by the IRU in 1949. At the moment, only eleven out of 32 landlocked countries have taken the prerequisite step of implementing the UN TIR system to harmonise, facilitate and secure their trade and transit. Elsewhere, trucks are held up at borders for hours, days and even weeks, according to the IRU. (ben)
