Making livestock fit for re-export?
Australia's department of agriculture, fisheries, and forestry (Daff) reports that all livestock from the “MV Bahijah” have been discharged and trucked to premises in Western Australia.
The carrier had loaded cattle and sheep in Fremantle Port bound for the Middle East but had to return due to the worsening situation in the Red Sea region. Since its departure on 5 January, four cattle (0.18%) and 64 sheep (0.45%) have died on board, and seven cattle and six sheep on land. Daff: "The next steps for the livestock are a commercial decision for the exporter."
That might include their re-export via an extended and unprecedented journey around Africa. For charities like the RSPCA, "the only conscionable thing for the exporter to do is to allow a safe, secure and humane solution to be found as soon as possible and as close as possible to their current location."
