Make America’s ship industry great again

Last week US president Donald Trump signed an executive order aimed at restoring America’s maritime dominance.

The order outlines a maritime action plan to rebuild the US commercial shipbuilding base, expand the maritime workforce and reduce reliance on foreign shipping sectors, primarily China’s. It calls for new financial incentives, trade measures and regulatory reforms to support US shipyards, logistics and port infrastructure.

The plan includes launching a maritime security trust fund, establishing prosperity zones and increasing the US-flagged fleet for national security. The Trump administration believes the revitalisation of maritime industries is vital for economic growth and national resilience. Agencies must now deliver detailed strategies to implement the plan.
