Major locomotive order from Guinea
The Wabtec Corporation, a US manufacturer, has secured a USD 248 million order for its ‘Evolution Series’ locomotives and services from Winning Consortium Simandou (WCS). The locos will support rail operations for the Baowu & Winning joint venture at the high-grade iron ore project in east Guinea.
This agreement follows a locomotive order a few months earlier from SimFer, a Rio Tinto joint venture, to serve its operations at Simandou (Guinea).
Wabtec will begin delivering locomotives to the Simandou project in 2025. A 600 km railway line, the TransGuinéen Railway, is currently under construction to transport iron ore. Once completed, the line will connect the Simandou mine to the port of Morebaya. (ben)
