Major investments despite high loss

The Swiss railfreight operator SBB Cargo has posted a loss totalling CHF 42.6 million, compared to CHF 18.0 million in 2023. Decreased demand in individual sectors such as the construction industry led to a drop in domestic freight traffic.

On the international level, the company attributed the lower result to the current economic climate, particularly in Germany and Italy, the restrictions in the Gotthard Base Tunnel and the increase in construction activity on certain routes in Germany.

With the help of the Swiss government, SBB Cargo seeks to put railfreight on an economically sustainable footing. To this end, it is planning a renewal of its rolling stock, digitalisation, automation and fair prices. (ben)
