Maersk signs Magna Charta
Seafreight giant Maersk has inked the low carbon charter launched by the Hong Kong Business Environment Council (BEC). The carrier is now committed to contributing towards Hong Kong’s long-term decarbonisation ambition and the goals of the Paris agreement.
“Decarbonisation is a strategic imperative for our industry and for Maersk”, said Daan Slotema, head of legal, Maersk Asia Pacific. Maersk reports that it is accelerating efforts to decarbonise marine operations, most recently with the order of eight large ocean-going container vessels capable of running on carbon neutral methanol.
The company plans to introduce the first vessel in Q1/ 2024. The BEC low carbon charter was launched in March 2019 to set and achieve carbon reduction targets. Since 2020, it has welcomed companies from all sectors. (cd)
