Lower volumes in combined transport
Falling demand, strikes, declining quality and cost pressures have impacted freight volumes: In 2023, Germany-based Kombiverkehr shifted a total of 815,467 truckloads from road to rail, or 1.63 million teu. The company therefore shipped 15.9% fewer containers, swap bodies and semitrailers than in 2022.
In total, 19 million gross tonnes of goods were moved by rail, saving 1.2 million t of CO2 last year alone. Kombiverkehr said that the EU directives were crucial for the future of intermodal transport.
But the current market situation is not rosy, and Germany’s federal budget also contains cuts for railfreight, which means that operators and freight forwarders must pay a higher price for the use of train paths. (ben)
