Lower track access prices and innovation impulses
Several measures are urgently needed in order for the railway to continue growing. The railway trade body, Netzwerk Europäischer Bahnen (NEE), based this conclusion on the findings of a new study.
Alongside extending the infrastructure, track access charges – or railway “tolls”- have to be halved as quickly as possible, the NEE said. All rail tracks are subject to charges, whereas the road haulage sector only pays tolls on 6% of the road network.
The NEE went on to state that new innovation impulses are urgently needed for rail transport. The focus should not be placed on single technologies, but rather on the actual transport requirements, new logistics concepts, innovative freight wagons and loading technologies. (ben)
