Lower track access charges to boost competitiveness

Switzerland: the federal office of transport (FoT) wants to lower track access charges by around CHF 90 million per annum from 2021, thus improving the competitiveness of rail transport. Efficiency gains and an increasing degree of automation will allow the country to implement the price reduction.

The move is expected to benefit, inter alia, the railfreight sector as its charges will be cut by around CHF 20 to CHF 30 million. The Federal Council now needs to take a decision on the FoT’s proposal.

The Swiss railfreight operator, SBB Cargo, says that it welcomes the initiative and will use the money that it saves on track charges to promote innovation. (ben)
