Looking to lower insurance claims
Groke Technologies is urging marine insurers, P&I Clubs, and regulators to promote the widespread adoption of ship situational awareness systems to reduce collisions and insurance claims. This comes amidst concerns over increasing ship traffic and a shortage of seafarers, which heighten the risk of accidents.
According to Allianz Global Corporate & Specialty, 17% of marine insurance claims from 2017 to 2021 were due to collisions, foundering, or sinking, with collisions being the second top cause. Emsa reports also highlight collisions as a major cause of incidents, often occurring in poor visibility or bad weather.
Situational awareness systems integrate data from various navigational tools to enhance safety and reduce human error and provide real-time risk analysis, helping watchkeepers make informed decisions.
Groke Technologies’ chief commercial officer, Jonas Bergring, anticipates that situational awareness technology will become an IMO requirement by 2028, with class notations and voluntary guidance expected by 2026. (pb)
