Long Beach paves the way

The US West Coast Port of Long Beach moved almost 7.89 million teu in the course of the first ten months of 2021. This is an upswing of 21% compared to the same period in 2020.

Although congestion and limited capacity at marine terminals slowed imports at the Port of Long Beach last month, volumes were still strong enough to mark the port’s second-busiest October with almost 790,000 teu, down 2.1% compared to the same month in 2020. Imports declined by 4.3% to 385,000 teu, while exports increased 6.6% to 122,000 teu.

“We are working around the clock at the port,” said Long Beach harbour commission president Steven Neal. “We’re doing everything we can with help from the supply chain to get goods off the ships and onto store shelves in time for the holidays.”

The port's outlook is to handle more than 9 million teu by the end of this year, surpassing the mark of 8.1 million teu achieved in 2020. (sh)
