London Gateway augments rail capacity by 50%
DP World has added two new rail-mounted gantry (RMG) cranes to its London Gateway rail terminal, increasing rail capacity by 50%. These cranes, operational from mid-August, will boost box handling capacity by 75% and support the growing demand for rail connections and sustainable supply chain solutions.
The enhanced capacity aligns with DP World’s commitment to railfreight, evidenced by the London Gateway-Southampton direct rail service and the ‘Southampton modal shift programme’, which has increased railfreight‘s share at the hub to 30% since September 2023.
The GBP 12 milion (USD 15.2 million) RMG cranes, weighing 480 t with a lifting capacity of 41 t, were delivered by ZPMC.
This development precedes the launch of London Gateway’s GBP 350 million (USD 442 million) all-electric fourth berth, set to open later this year. DP World’s expanded capabilities at London Gateway and Southampton are part of its broader global network which operates in 78 countries and handles 10% of world trade. (pb)
