Logistics milestone in Basel
The Gateway Basel Nord, a Swiss trimodal terminal, has received planning permission for its first construction phase after seven years of proceedings.
This milestone underscores the project's importance in shifting goods from road to rail and its role in enhancing the competitiveness of Switzerland's logistics hub. The project also includes ecological measures, such as constructing a natural bridge to support local wildlife.
By consolidating cargo flows, Gateway Basel Nord addresses the need for efficient and high-capacity handling of goods between Switzerland, seaports, and continental transportation hubs. It also resolves capacity issues at the Rhine Port Kleinhüningen. The consolidation of Swiss imports and exports by water and rail at one location aims to achieve a 50% modal shift towards rail transport within Switzerland. (pb)
