Locos with ETCS by DB Cargo
DB Cargo UK has signed a contract with Siemens Mobility to install the ‘European Train Control System’ (ETCS) on its class 66 freight locomotives.
The first phase will begin in July, with nine locomotives being fitted at the Toton traction maintenance depot. This initiative is part of the UK’s GBP 1.4 billion ‘East Coast Digital Programme’, which will replace traditional lineside signals with in-cab digital technology under the ‘European Rail Traffic Management System’ (ERTMS).
Siemens Mobility, as the programme’s partner, will install its ‘Trainguard 200’ on-board unit on the locomotives.
According to Jon Harman, DB Cargo UK’s head of asset management and maintenance, the delivery of the ERTMS in the UK “will deliver a more dynamic, reliable and safer railway for all those who use it.” The project is scheduled for completion in March 2026. (js)
