Lithuanian haulier banks on rail
Girteka’s intermodal railfreight division shipped twice as many full truckloads in 2021 than in the previous year. The Lithuania-based haulier transported over 16,100 fully-loaded trailers travelling on rail tracks, saving more than 14.4 million kg of CO2 emissions, as the FTLs covered more than 15.2 million km in the EU.
By carrying FTLs on trains across Europe, Girteka was able to reduce the number of tires by at least 900 and avoid at least 61 accidents on the road.
In 2022, the logistics provider plans to prioritise its intermodal services to and from UK. Overall, Girteka aims to raise the number of FTLs carried by intermodal rail transport by 50%. (ben)
