Less throughput in Hong Kong
In Q2/2023, the Port of Hong Kong saw a decline in throughput compared to Q2/2022. The handling of containers dropped to 3.69 million teu, marking a nearly 22% yoy decrease, as reported by the regional census and statistics department. Overall cargo throughput also fell, reaching 44.5 million t, which is nearly 15% lower than in Q2/2022.
There was however an 11.7% increase in the number of ocean vessels calling at the port, totalling 4,785 vessels, and total capacity rose by 28% to 77.1 million t.
Inland navigation posted even more significant growth, with a 30.1% uptick in the number of river vessels arriving, reaching 18,456, and a 1.8% improvement in total capacity, reaching 18.4 million t. (pb)
