Lake Kivu study explores CNG for vessels
HPC Hamburg Port Consulting has delivered a market analysis and pre-feasibility study on switching to compressed natural gas (CNG) for vessels on Lake Kivu (Rwanda) and regional transport vehicles, as part of a collaboration with the Central Corridor Transit Transport Facilitation Agency (CCTTFA) and Rwanda's ministry of infrastructure.
The project explores the use of locally produced CNG from Lake Kivu's methane reserves to replace diesel and petrol, aiming to cut greenhouse gas emissions and enhance energy security. HPC's study assesses technical feasibility, emissions impact, and funding needs, supporting Rwanda's push for sustainable transport.
The initiative highlights the strategic role of Lake Kivu within the regional transport network and aims to foster economic and environmental benefits. The findings could pave the way for expanding the use of CNG to other lakes and transport modes along the central corridor. (pb)
