Lagos-Kano rail line reopens for traffic

On 6 June 2024, freight services resumed along the old narrow gauge stretch on the south-north corridor in Nigeria after the construction works to rehabilitate the track had been completed. The 1,300 km long line connects the Nigerian capital with the commercial hub of Kano in the north.

A trial run was conducted before the section was officially reopened. During this test phase, Nigeria transported a larger quantity of 40 ft containers between Apapa Port in Lagos in the south to the Zawaciki Inland Port in Kano state. The resumed line is part of the West African railway network.

The reinstallation works on the Lagos-Kano line were carried out by the Chinese company China Civil Engineering Construction Corporation (CCECC). (ben)
