Kyrgyzstan has great potential along key corridors
Kyrgyzstan can tap into the benefits of its strategic location along key transport corridors between Europe and Asia. Fundamental for its success is the creation of a modern transport infrastructure network, according to a Unece study. Road haulage remains the focus of freight transport in Kyrgyzstan. Major investment is planned to improve road access routes to the Euro-Asian transport links.
Rail transport to date has suffered from a poor infrastructure, which has led to today’s railfreight volumes amounting to less than 10% of their value in 1990. Future plans to unite the network and connect it to China will facilitate the growth of rail transport, potentially by as much as 30%, according to the study. (ben)
