Krems with wind under its wings
Total throughput in the port of Krems an der Donau remained stable at around 1.1 million t from January to September 2020 (-0.5% compared to the previous year). River-based throughput increased by 30% to 416,000 t, which includes 200,000 t of bulk solids that are temporarily stored in the port.
Yet, the trimodal port recorded declines in the agricultural sector. Railfreight volumes fell by 14% to 265,000 t, as there was less traffic especially in the container and steel sectors. Truck throughput dropped by 12% to 405,000 t, as the decline in bulk goods in waterside traffic affected truck output volume.
In contrast, warehouse utilisation was at a record level. In total, Rhenus managed 30,000 sqm of its own hall space and an additional 5,000 sqm.
The trimodal and multifunctional location already completed international wind power repowering projects (dismantling and transport of used wind turbines) in the first half of the year.
Managing director Gerhard Gussmagg commented: "These projects will continue and will hopefully be complemented with new construction projects in Austria." (cd)
