Kolter takes leadership in Emden
Christoph Kolter officially took over the helm at Emden’s port office, Germany on 1 June 2021. He succeeds Frank Herbig, who retires after having served the ports in Lower Saxony for 29 years. Until autumn 2020, Kolter was deputy captain of the port of Cuxhaven and he already served at Emden from February 2017 to September 2018 in the same position.
As a naval officer, he was deployed to the Horn of Africa and later off the coast of Sumatra to track down pirates, secure trade routes and provide humanitarian aid. He subsequently worked in merchant shipping, steering general cargo, multipurpose and container ships on journeys through the world's oceans.
Together with his team, Kolter's mission is, for example, to regulate shipping traffic, assign berths, operate the locks, as well as supervise the accounting of ships' services.
Kolter also assumes the tasks of the port authority in Emden on behalf of the Lower Saxony ministry of the economy, labour, transport and digitalisation. The official activities include hazard prevention in port and shipping matters, the security of ports and port facilities, the transport of dangerous goods in the port, and much more. (amh)
