Kiel-Klaipeda route celebrates 30th anniversary
The ports of Kiel (Germany) and Klaipeda (Lithuania) are celebrating the 30th anniversary of cooperation this year. The only daily direct ferry connection between these two countries for cargo and passengers opened in 1993.
For Algis Latakas, general firector of the Klaipeda State Seaport Authority, “this is just the beginning”. Indeed, a Danish shipping company joined the route with a ferry line in 1998: DFDS.
Its route director Aleksej Slipenciuk says that “the route has become an important cargo and passenger transportation bridge between Germany and Lithuania”. Trade on the Baltic Sea route has increased steadily over the past 30 years. (lh)
