Kenya Airways cuts the net
After years of flying monkeys to USA for animal testing, Kenya Airways has decided to end the lucrative business at the end of February, following an appeal by animal rights group Peta.
The decision was triggered by a truck accident on 21 January in Pennsylvania, in which possibly infected macaques imported by Kenya Airways from Mauritius escaped into the wild and come into contact with humans – thus breaking the safety of routes on which monkeys are transported to laboratories in the USA, away from the public eye.
The yellow routes pictured are to private labs; green to universities; red to government agencies; and black to the National Primate Research Centre.
Meanwhile, the department of agriculture is investigating the case, as Peta USA has filed a complaint with the responsible agencies for numerous possible violations of applicable guidelines. (ah)
