Kalmar: another big order from New Zealand
Kalmar, which is part of Cargotec, a provider of cargo and load handling solutions, has secured a large order for four Kalmar hybrid straddle carriers from its long-term customer, the Port of Tauranga on New Zealand’s North Island.
New Zealand’s largest container terminal already uses a number of Kalmar straddle carriers, including the three hybrid models it purchased in 2020. The terminal handles around 25 million t of cargo and 1.2 million teu per year.
Allan M. Baker, sales director, Asia Pacific, Kalmar: "Our hybrid straddle carriers, which can cut fuel consumption by up to 40% compared to equivalent diesel-powered machines, will help the port meet its carbon-reduction targets."
Dan Kneebone, property & infrastructure manager, Port of Tauranga: "We plan to be carbon-zero by 2050 and to reduce emissions by 5% per year relative to cargo volumes.” (lh)
