Kaliningrad to become east-west gateway

Russian Railways RZD is set to develop a multimodal transport and logistics centre in the Kaliningrad exclave, to increase delivery speeds and reliability and reduce logistics costs for shippers.

The export-import hub will see freight shipped both to and from Russia, as well as to and from the rest of Europe and countries in the Asia-Pacific region. At present, the Kaliningrad hub tranships containers, bulk and heavy consignments from 1520 mm broad gauge wagons to 1435 mm narrow gauge wagons.

The terminal is equipped with all the equipment needed to process 450,000 teu and 2 million t of other cargo annually, according to RZD. (ben)
