JV founded in Shanghai
The classification corporation DNV and the shipping branch of the Atlas Corp, the containership owner and operator Seaspan, have set up a joint collaboration space (JCS) in Shanghai. Atlas president and CEO Bing Chen explained the entity's goals. “The JCS will serve as an interactive platform for expertise for the two entities, to exchange experiences and insights and to expand jointly into new areas, including onshore and offshore renewable energies, decarbonisation and digitalisation.”
Kun Li, senior vice-president of Seaspan, and Knut Ørbeck-Nilssen, CEO of DNV Maritime, were joined by Norbert Kray, DNV regional manager for Greater China, at the opening. DNV and Seaspan have collaborated for more than two decades. DNV was a partner in Seaspan’s build-up of its container fleet, which now comprises 201 vessels including newbuilds, ranging from 2,500 teu to 24,000 teu, with the majority of ships classed by DNV.
The JCS will continue to support Seaspan's ongoing and future newbuild programmes in Asia, and further facilitate new areas of cooperation beyond the maritime industry, such as renewable energy and R&D. (sh)
