Joint forces in Manzanillo
E Pluribus Unum in Mexico: The port and the terminal operators in Manzanillo have jointly founded the Association of Terminals and Operators of Manzanillo (Astom), an organisation that aims to promote and further strengthen the Port of Manzanillo.
Among the objectives are improved connectivity, process optimisation and innovation, all guided by the principles of social and environmental responsibility. The alliance involves Contecon Manzanillo (CMSA), the Ictsi Mexican subsidiary, Grupo Carrix – SSA, Ocupa, and Friman as well as Hazesa, Corporación Multimodal and TAP Terminals.
CMSA will lead Astom for the next couple of years represented by José Antonio Contreras, CMSA CEO and Astom president. “It’s our responsibility as an association to seek the constant development of the Port of Manzanillo", said Contreras.
He added: “We must continue to improve and grow, which is why the second northern access to the port is being built, and why we are expanding the capacity of the Specialised Container Terminal II by 40%, among other investments."
As Mexico’s main logistics hub, the Port of Manzanillo handles 40% of the containers that enter and exit the country, and 70% of import cargo that arrives on the Pacific coast. (cd)
