Jaxport hits the jackpot in May
In May, Jacksonville Port in Florida (USA), aka Jaxport, set a new record for monthly container volumes. Box movements increased by 37% over the same month in 2020, to more than 128,900 teu in May 2021.
Previously the record, set in October 2019, had stood at 123,700 teu. In fiscal 2021 almost 950,000 teu have moved through Jaxport, up by 15% for the year to date.
The port’s two largest trade lanes for containers are to and from Puerto Rico and Asia, and year-to-date volumes there are up by 19% and 18% respectively.
The port’s auto volumes are up by 15% over the same period last year. Jaxport is continuing to invest in efficiency and capacities.
A federal project to deepen the shipping channel through to Blount Island from 12.2 m to 14.3 m is set to be completed in 2022, and berth enhancements to enable Jaxport to simultaneously handle two post-panamax ships are coming along well.
