Japanese typhoon and European holidays
Air cargo tonnages in week 33 dipped sharply, compared with the previous week, dropping especially steeply in traffic from Asia Pacific (-9%) and Europe (-11%).
Further analysis, based on the over 450,000 weekly transactions covered by World ACD’s data, reveals that most of the decline in volumes from Asia-Pacific (almost 70%, or -6% points out of the -9%) can be explained by a drop in tonnages ex-Japan (-47%) due to a typhoon that led to flight cancellations to and from the island nation.
Services with South Korea were affected to a much lesser extent. Similarly, around 80% (or -9% points out of the -11%) of the decline ex-Europe can be explained by a fall in tonnages flown from countries where a 15 August holiday was widely celebrated (significantly in France, Italy and Spain, but also parts of Germany and Belgium).
