Italy's minister for infrastructure and transport
On 13 February 2021, the new Italian Prime Minister Mario Draghi swore in the economist, statistician and academic Enrico Giovannini as government minister for infrastructure and transport. Following Paola De Micheli, Giovannini manages a budget of EUR 32 billion.
From 1997 to 2000, he worked as director of the Italian office for statistics (Istat) and from 2009 to 2013 he served as its president.
Between those two mandates, Giovannini led the statistic department of OECD, an organisation for economic cooperation and development.
He also initiated the global project to measure the progress of societies, from which the movement “Beyond GDP” began.
From April 2013 until February 2014, Giovannini served in the Letta government as minister of labour and social policies. (amh)
