Italy: car transports by rail
Mercitalia Rail has launched a new connection for Italy’s automotive sector. The subsidiary of FS Italiane is now transporting Volkswagen cars between the Ligurian port of Savona on the north Italian coast and Arena Po near Piacenza. The cars arriving at Savona were manufactured in Spain and Germany. They are temporarily stored in Arena Po before being sold on the Italian market.
Initially, there will be three trains a week, which will be increased to five when fully operational. Last year, Mercitalia Rail transported cars in over 2,700 trains for the automotive industry, 10% above the volumes in 2022, when Mercitalia shipped around 300,000 cars by rail in Italy. (ben)
