Italian intermodal operator extends smart fleet

This year Mercitalia Intermodal, which is part of FS Italiane group, will further invest in the technology transformation of another 180 wagons.

Around 200 wagons, mainly of the T3000 type, have already been upgraded and equipped by the Austrian technology firm PJM in the past two years. Mercitalia Intermodal began upgrading its freight wagon fleet in 2017, and today more than one third of its freight wagon fleet is already ‘smart’.

For the technology transformation, Mercitalia focuses on digital monitoring functions and automated processes. Its transformation of the existing fleet relies on the ‘WaggonTracker’ system from Austrian railway technology specialist PJM. (ben)
