Isles of Scilly names freight vessel
The Isles of Scilly Steamship Group has announced that its new freight vessel will be named “Menawethan”, after one of the twelve uninhabited Eastern Isles. The name was chosen by the island community through a vote, with “Menawethan” emerging as the winner. The new vessel, set to replace “Gry Maritha” in 2026, will continue the task of transporting freight to and from the Isles of Scilly.
Known for its natural beauty and wildlife, including seals and seabirds, Menawethan, is a popular spot for kayakers and wildlife enthusiasts. Stuart Reid, chief executive of the Isles of Scilly Steamship Company, thanked the islanders for selecting such a fitting name.
Construction on the new vessel, as well as the passenger ship “Scillonian IV”, is progressing, with keel-laying ceremonies for both ships scheduled for next month. Both vessels are expected to enter service in 2026. (pb)
