Is this India's coolest cargo airport?
Kempegowda International Airport serving Bengaluru (BLR) has emerged as the No.1 airport in India for perishable shipments. According to the country's specialised authorities, BLR processed 48,130 t of perishables in FY 2020-21, accounting for 31% of India’s total perishable shipments by air.
In the process, BLR has also emerged as the biggest airport for exports of poultry products (28,182 t) and flowers (1,296 t). The perishables, which also included vegetables and fruits, were carried by 24 airlines to 46 international destinations. Doha was the top destination, followed by Singapore, London and Muscat.
Satyaki Raghunath, chief strategy and development officer of the airport operator (who introduced BLR in our last edition, ITJ 41-42/2021), pointed out that the airport's "aim is to create an environment that enables our cargo partners to introduce new initiatives and facilities that cater to constantly evolving demand.
