IRU and ETF urge EU to address driver shortage
The European transport workers’ federation (ETF) and the international road union (IRU) have renewed their commitment as social partners of the EU road transport sector to further improve working conditions for truck drivers.
Unfavourable working conditions are an undeniable contributor to the lack of attractiveness of the drivers’ profession, said the two associations. They urge the EU to address driver shortage by developing more safe and secure parking areas for truck drivers and by efficiently enforcing social rules in mobility and logistics.
Currently, 100,000 parking slots are lacking in the EU and less than 3% of the 300,000 existing parking spaces meet safety and security standards. In 2019, 20% of drivers’ positions were unfilled in the EU. (ben)
